Real Food

What is 'Real Food'?

Real food is food with as little processing and ingredients as possible. We like to focus our diet mostly around seasonal vegetables and fruits with a small amount of quality meat and seafood. We have our own chickens, who admittedly, at 4 years old are pretty slack at giving us eggs, but the thought is there! We try and grow our own veges, especially things like salad greens and herbs.

For some variety we add nuts, seeds, legumes and rice. Herbs and spices are a must to add flavor and nutrients. Sometimes we don't live in an ideal world and time or convenience means I cannot prepare everything from scratch 100% of the time. If it comes in a packet, i like to keep to 5 (real food) ingredients or less - and no artificial colors, preservatives or flavors.  We also eat a lot of coconut - milk, cream, oil, yoghurt.   Having dietary requirements like dairy and wheat allergies means substitute foods like breads, cereals and bars can be very expensive. We have a pretty limited food budget so we generally stay away from packaged alternatives. They are usually also highly processed and full of sugar and additives to make them taste OK in the absence of wheat, gluten and butter!

We don't have a whole lot of time and we don't have a whole lot of money. But i am determined to nourish my family's bodies with food that makes us happy from the inside out, using simple and affordable ingredients and recipes.
